Visual Studies

This can be related the aims of the Visual arts course:

  • Students will become active in an artistic way, voicing their opinions
  • Seeing art from other points of view from around the world and from different cultures
  • Questioning knowledge and opinions, looking deeper into the Art world, looking at art of everyday and from different cultures and times
  • Students will become an informed, questioning, opinionated and compassionate artists during this course
  • Students will become risk takers, be open minded to new ideas and become reflective thinkers

Each project you undertake will be to help you gain skills and knowledge in different art disciplines. Your investigation in your work will be lead through your investigative workbook (IWB) and also through your Studio Work.

For the first Semester of the Visual Arts course students will learn a new technique or skill every 2 -3 weeks. They will also be taught how to investigate topics, critique their work and the work of others, and they will learn Theory of Knowledge. The course of work is a wide variety of Art genres, they will learn a great deal of skills and knowledge from this, and this will help create ideas and take own direction for their art to follow in. In this course they will learn how to express themselves and the things that interest them and they will discover their passions in Art and Design. It will be the beginning of an adventure of self discovery through the media of Art.


Programme Of Study

  • Still Life Drawing – Looking at the different aspects of creating a Still Life, using the Art Elements and Principles of Art. Students will learn how to use different media effectively and will also look at different styles of Still Life.
     
  • Photography - For this project, students will understand the basics of digital photography, photographic manipulation. Looking specifically at Portrait and Still Life photographers and using their influences to create photographs of aesthetic quality with depth of meaning. Students will also be looking at the theory of knowledge in Photography.
     
  • Screen Printing and Wood Cut Printing - With the theme of Pop Art, students will learn how to screen print and use the tools for Wood Cut printing. Theory of Knowledge will also be taught in this unit.
     
  • Portraits, Figure Drawing and Sculpture - Life drawing using the rules of proportions. Students will also learn how to do Anatomical drawings and these will then be transformed to 3-D, through the media of wire, ceramic and other 3-D media.
     
  • Ceramics – Students will learn the skills to create ceramic artworks, functional and decorative.

Students also undertake a Viva Voce, which is an interview about their work with an External Assessor. This is a part of the External Assessment of their work.

All students will start on the Higher Level A option, assessment and discussion of students work will dictate what Level and Option they are entered for in the exam.

I recommend that students buy art reference books during the course, especially the ones listed below:

  • The 20th Century Art Book – Phaidon
Students should also have some art materials for home use, acrylic paint, water colours and a good set of colour pencils.
