The Wider Curriculum

The Wider Curriculum is very important part of education at school, and it includes the following types of activity: Personal and Social Education, homeroom time, co-curricular activities, work experience, house activities and curriculum enhancement week. It also includes the less visible aspects of school life, such as the code of conduct, school uniform and the way in which we interact as individuals within a school community.

These factors reflect the values, or fundamental beliefs of this school and are also extremely important to the way we go about working and learning together. This largely explains why we expect students to dress and behave in a way that represents the school's beliefs and values, as well as those of society as a whole.

Why The Wider Curriculum Is Important

  1. As unique individuals, each student will have different abilities and aptitudes, and it is our responsibility to offer as many opportunities as possible to discover particular talents so that they can make full use of them in their future lives.

  2. The whole school curriculum is designed to offer a wide range of activities - opportunities for our students to experience, experiment and excel.

  3. Activities in the wider curriculum are important for a variety of reasons, such as:

    • There is simply not enough time within the normal school day, to provide all of the opportunities that we want to offer.

    • Not everything achieved whilst at school is, or can be, formally assessed in terms of academic examination qualifications.

    • The school would be failing in its responsibilities if it failed to offer these other, equally important opportunities to explore and succeed.

    • They contribute to the development of a powerful community spirit within the school.

    • They can make a huge difference when applying for jobs or places in Further and Higher Education around the world, when many students of similar academic ability are competing for a small number of vacancies or places.

Our students need to stand out from the crowd!

Achievements in these other activities, whilst not formally assessed, will be formally recognized and recorded in several ways, including:

  • School Reports issued at the end of each semester.

  • In the Student Diary, in which every teacher can make positive comments about attitude and behaviour.

  • Confidential References written by the Director of School to support applications for university and college places, and/or employment.
